Halloween Costume Swap

We’ve noticed children are already checking out library books about Halloween, so we know that soon they’ll be thinking about what they want to be for Trick-or-Treat night. Be green and save money too by participating in our Halloween Costume Swap on Saturday, Sept. 11th from 10:00 to 11:00 am.

Bring your clean, gently used Halloween costumes from previous years to the Library any time during regular Library hours during the week of Sept. 7th. Then come back with your trick-or-treaters on Sat. the 11th to choose “like new” costumes. All remaining costumes after the swap will be donated to charity. Call Lindsey at the library (772-5022) with any questions.

TumbleBook Library Trial Period Extended!

If you’ve been too busy to take a look at TumbleBook Library with your child this summer, you still have time to try it out. The trial period has been extended until September 30th. TumbleBook Library is a collection of online, animated picture books that you can access from home. Click here to get started. You will need to call or email the Library to obtain password and login information.

Grace is Back!

After a short summer vacation, Grace is coming back! Grace is a trained therapy dog who volunteers at the library with her owner/handler, Dee, as part of our Reading Education Assistance Dogs® program. The R.E.A.D. program allows children the opportunity to practice their reading skills and gain self-confidence in a relaxing and fun environment by reading to these special dogs who are very patient listeners! Parents may sign up their children for a 10-minute one-on-one slot. We recommend that you sign up in person and take a reminder slip home with you indicating the day and time your child is scheduled to read to Grace. Grace will be at the library the first Thursday of each month from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. Please arrive 5-10 minutes ahead of your time slot to choose books to read or you may bring books from home. Call us to sign up for Grace’s next visit on Sept. 2nd.

For fourth, fifth, and sixth graders looking for good books to read over the summer we recommend trying a book on the 2010-2011 Great Stone Face Award list. The Great Stone Face Award is given each year by New Hampshire Children’s Librarians to an author whose book receives the most votes by 4th-6th grade students. The winner for 2009-2010 is Gordon Korman’s Swindle. An unscrupulous baseball card collector swindles 6th grader Griffin Bing out of a valuable card, so Griffin assembles a group of unlikely misfits to steal the card back. Swindle and the nominees for 2010-2011 can be found in the library’s children’s room.

Enjoy Ebooks From your Library!

The New Hampshire Downloadable Audiobook website has a new look! The front page now highlights the new ebooks collection. The collection currently contains 154 titles, and more will be purchased each week. To read ebooks you will need to download the free Adobe Digital Editions software. Ebooks can be transferred to a compatible device such as a Sony Reader or a Barnes and Noble Nook or read on your PC or Mac computer. Cut the Carbon Kits are Here!

The Library is partnering with nhsaves, a collaboration of New Hampshire’s electric utilities, and the NH State Library to educate our patrons about their electricity use. Nhsaves has donated two Cut the Carbon kits to KPL. Each kit includes a Kill A Watt meter along with instruction sheet, energy tips brochure, and a bookmark. Each kit can be checked out at no charge for two weeks, just like any book or movie you check out from KPL.

To use, simply plug the Kill A Watt meter into a wall outlet and plug an electric appliance (i.e., computer, television, refrigerator) into the meter. Each kit comes with a worksheet you can use to calculate the energy costs associated with running each of your electric appliances.
