SUMMARY:Becoming Wolf: Eastern Coyotes in New Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:Chris Schadler returns to KPL for a talk on Becoming Wolf: Eastern Coyotes in New Hampshire \nMyths surround the coyote and cloud our understanding of it. Originating as the \nsmaller western coyote\, eastern coyotes share genes with the eastern wolf and \nGreat Lakes Gray Wolf. Its hybrid nature enables its resilience and adaptability to \nlive in farms\, forest\, or cities. While livestock are not its natural prey\, sheep\, goat \nand chicken farmers can coexist and even benefit from their presence. \nIt has rewilded the northeast with its howl and ability to prey on large and small \nmammals but despite its ecological benefits\, it is the most persecuted carnivore in \nNorth America. And despite human efforts to eradicate it\, it survives and thrives \namong us. \nChris holds a Masters in Conservation Biology and offers 40 years of \nresearch and specialization in wild canids\, particularly the Eastern Wolf \nand the Eastern Coyote. Now retired from teaching Conservation\, \nDendrology and Wolf Ecology at UNH and Conservation at Granite \nState College\, she provides education and presentations throughout New \nEngland.
