SUMMARY:Hidden History of Portsmouth with Glenn Knoblock (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:One of New Hampshire’s oldest towns\, Portsmouth has always been known for its historical sites. And yet\, there is more to Portsmouth than meets the eye\, and more history to be discovered than can be told on the city’s many historic markers. The houses on the The Hill only hint at the historic neighborhood that once existed in the northern part of town\, while the Portsmouth African Burying Ground Memorial points to an extensive history that dates back over 375 years. Of course\, maritime\, and naval history abounds here\, while St. John’s and North Church are representative of a religious history that stretches far back in time. \n Please contact the library for links to all the virtual events.

SUMMARY:Claire Evans will present:  From Uptown Girls to Downton Abbey: How American Gilded Age Heiresses Invaded the British Aristocracy
DESCRIPTION:Cash-flush Gilded Age American socialites were willing to trade their family’s money for an ancient title and often a chilly reception in the British aristocracy. Fans of “Downton Abbey” and “The Gilded Age” on television and film will delight as Anglophile and former U.K. resident Claire Evans recounts the tales of some of the famously loaded young Americans who infused bank accounts of many stately homes\, including close relatives of Winston Churchill and Princess Diana. \nAnd!  Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale hits theaters Sept. 12. \n  \nPlease contact the library for the link for virtual events.
