SUMMARY:Book Club: Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
DESCRIPTION:Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars. But Athena’s a literary darling. June Hayward is literally nobody. Who wants stories about basic white girls\, June thinks. \nSo when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident\, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece\, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers during World War I. \nSo what if June edits Athena’s novel and sends it to her agent as her own work? So what if she lets her new publisher rebrand her as Juniper Song—complete with an ambiguously ethnic author photo? Doesn’t this piece of history deserve to be told\, whoever the teller? That’s what June claims\, and the New York Times bestseller list seems to agree. \nBut June can’t get away from Athena’s shadow\, and emerging evidence threatens to bring June’s (stolen) success down around her. As June races to protect her secret\, she discovers exactly how far she will go to keep what she thinks she deserves. \nBook club will meet on Tuesday\, November 19th at 6:30PM at the library and on Wednesday\, November 20th at 12 noon at Eastman’s corner.

SUMMARY:Dan Billin: Last of the Granite State Rattlesnakes
DESCRIPTION:Dan Billin: Last of the Granite State Rattlesnakes\n  \nRattlesnakes were so common in colonial-era New Hampshire that dozens of places were named for them\, ranging from the Massachusetts border to the White Mountains. They were so abundant some settlers could pay their property taxes with the bounties offered for killing them. Today\, however\, Crotalus horridus\, the timber rattlesnake\, is the state’s rarest native animal—only a handful are known to survive. State law protects them now\, but that may not be enough to save them. Wildlife biologists have predicted this tiny remnant will die out without extraordinary intervention. \nThis event will  be held in-person at the library.

SUMMARY:Becoming Wolf: Eastern Coyotes in New Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:Chris Schadler returns to KPL for a talk on Becoming Wolf: Eastern Coyotes in New Hampshire \nMyths surround the coyote and cloud our understanding of it. Originating as the \nsmaller western coyote\, eastern coyotes share genes with the eastern wolf and \nGreat Lakes Gray Wolf. Its hybrid nature enables its resilience and adaptability to \nlive in farms\, forest\, or cities. While livestock are not its natural prey\, sheep\, goat \nand chicken farmers can coexist and even benefit from their presence. \nIt has rewilded the northeast with its howl and ability to prey on large and small \nmammals but despite its ecological benefits\, it is the most persecuted carnivore in \nNorth America. And despite human efforts to eradicate it\, it survives and thrives \namong us. \nChris holds a Masters in Conservation Biology and offers 40 years of \nresearch and specialization in wild canids\, particularly the Eastern Wolf \nand the Eastern Coyote. Now retired from teaching Conservation\, \nDendrology and Wolf Ecology at UNH and Conservation at Granite \nState College\, she provides education and presentations throughout New \nEngland.
