Wed. May 1st Kevin Martin 5:30 PM at the library: Big Trees of New England

Big Trees of Northern New England directs you on over 50 hikes, bikes, or paddles to find over 150 of the largest trees on public lands, both in the countryside and in the cities. Maine trips include ancient hemlocks near the coast and red spruce along the Appalachian Trail. New Hampshire has its yellow birch in Franconia Notch, one of the country’s biggest eastern white pines in Tamworth, and a great tour of trees in Portsmouth. Vermont includes a red pine in the Northeast Kingdom that competes for National Champion status and a giant red oak in Burlington. Massachusetts has several great tours of white pines and a small-town walk in Westford to see the state champion shagbark hickory and black oak.

Wooden boatbuilder, outdoorsman and Big Tree Program measurer, Kevin Martin, will be
showing and discussing these trees as described in his new book Big Trees of Northern New
England. You will hear how he got involved with finding the trees, how lumber from similar
trees is used in his boatbuilding work, and how wildlife will use these impressive parts of our
landscape. The discussion will cover trees on public land in the region, and where they are
located so you can go see them for yourself. City tours are also described. He will highlight
some trees local to the seacoast area.
Books will be available after the presentation for those interested.
